There are 2 different parts to this project -
First, to set up medical camps in the rural areas of Bangladesh. You may not be aware, but most people, about 70%, in Bangladesh live below the poverty line and unlike Canada, they do not have access to free medical insurance and anything of that sort. This also prevents many from earning a living. We want to help the less fortunate with problems and diseases that can be easily prevented and/or can be cured through medication and surgery, be it cataracts, immunization or providing artificial limbs, at no cost to them. This is something I haven't heard many organizations do (I am NOT saying that it’s not been done before - just that it’s not been done as often as I would like it to be). Note that the donations you make will go into paying for the doctors and the nurses and also for the medication they may require. However, all costs of collecting the money, sending it abroad and other administrative costs will be borne by us personally. Also, we still have not gotten many volunteers IN Bangladesh let alone some willing to travel to rural areas to help. So we might have to 'pay' and that too will be borne by us and not taken out of your donations. Hence, I would also like to note that even though I am actually looking into a medical camp being set sometime in the winter (soon-ish...maybe February or March?) I might take a while for us to earn the money to pay everyone and bear the costs of administration. Just a heads up! No big worries as of now. :)
Secondly, we will help other extremely poor students (from anywhere in the country) with scholarships to continue their education. Most kids can not afford to go to school (even the government schools are not free after grade 6 as far as I know) and would rather work and help bring food to the table than study. Some break the norm and go to school - however, many can't afford the fees to sit for SSC and HSC exams (those are kind of like the O and A levels of edexcel or Grade 10 and 12 here in the western world - however the standards are not comparable). The only requirements will be to have a strong will (‘Ichcha’) to study and can show financial needs (kind of like OSAP isn't it?). Alongside, we plan to set up a school in the slums near the edge of Dhaka, the Capital, for the children there (funds permitting of course). Once enrolled, we will provide them with nutritious meals every day, basic medication and vaccinations, books and stationeries and so on. We will also educate them on the issues facing Bangladesh like the environmental problems. At this point, I have to admit it will take a really long time to build a school (even though we may have a land donor) but please stick around and help us through. Your support is our motivation.
Well, that about everything in a nutshell.
Comments, queries or criticisms - let us know :) We are looking forward to it.
P.S more real stats coming up soon!
